COCAINE was a good ploy for ATLANTA during the time it was introduced for consumption via COCA-COLA (coca- used for cocaine, cola- used for its caffeine).
When Atlanta became the first US city to "go dry" in 1886, outlawing and prohibiting sale and consumption of alcohol, John Pemberton founded Coca-Cola, at the time, an experimental temperance drink -temperance means abstinence from alcohol consumption- that blew up in popularity, was combined with cocaine "a supposedly magical drug" as stated by Sigmund Freud.
Sigmund, an Austrian psychoanalyst, was of the first to recommend Cocaine as a cure depression and sexual impotence. He claimed cocaine was potentially toxic but not fatal, proved wrong by a patient who died after being prescribed a high dosage.
Atlanta was dry for only 2 years, then legalized alcohol again. But it wasn't until 1903 that Coca-Cola decided to remove cocaine from is product. Usage of cocaine and the health dangers became common which is the real reason for the removal of cocaine from Coca-Cola.
From 1886 to 1903 (7 years strong), the beginning and most important years of one of the leading brands in soft drinks.
